Prevention Tonics

Protection for your companions

What Is Homeoprophylaxis?

In homeopathy, there is a special types of remedy called sarcodes and nosodes. A barcode is made from healthy tissue such as thyroid gland A nosode (from nosos, the Greek word meaning disease) is a homeopathic preparation made from matter from a sick animal or person. Substances such as respiratory discharges or diseased tissues are used. It sounds repulsive, but the preparation, using alcohol, as well as the repeated dilution and succussion, essentially renders the substances harmless, while producing a powerful remedy.
These tonics, like all homeopathic remedies, are very easy to administer: they are given by mouth, and don't even need to be swallowed. They are also very economical - far less expensive, in fact, than vaccination.

There are some limitations to the use of homeopropylatics. Rabies vaccination for dogs is required by law for the Pet Travel Scheme and in many countries, and the rabies nosode, called Lyssin, will not satisfy that requirement. You should know, however, for the health of your animal, that all vaccines, including rabies are legally and medically approved for use in healthy animals only!
So if your dog is showing any signs of acute or chronic disease, s/he is exempt from that requirement and should not be vaccinated.

Are they affective in preventing disease?
There is only a small amount of evidence supporting the use of homeopropylactics in order to prevent animals catching disease but homeopaths have seen many incidents where they are convinced that disease has been prevented or the symptoms vastly reduced after nosodes have been given. The best studies are those of Christopher Day in this country (1) see below. There are many problems in putting these things to normal double blind type studies not least the ethical consideration of deliberately infecting animals with infectious diseases. Also cost and the large number of variables involved.
How can they be used?
Young animals can be given a tonic before they are likely to come across the disease, to help them fight it off. Symptoms seem to be much less in treated animals. (see Chris Day's kennel cough study as a good example of this) homeopropylactics are used in the herd situation to prevent or reduce the severity of disease for example mastitis in dairy herds in organic farming. Here a nosode is made up from the infected animals in a herd and given to all other animals in the herd to reduce the likely hood of them getting the disease.
How do I administer them?
Give your young companion a dose of a 30c tonic once a week until they are 7 months old. Thereafter repeat every 2-4 weeks, and if they are going into an at risk situation for example: Give 1 kennel nosode pill a few days before they go into kennels. They are given like other homeopathic remedies as pills or powders or in a liquid form. They appear to be able to be given in combination as conventional vaccines are but is is probably better to give separately whenever possible. They can be given in drinking water to a herd of cattle or as a spray into the nose. Consult your homeopathic vet for more advice
