Golden Paste

Tumeric is a wonderful herb

This is perhaps the easiest way to take it your self or give it to your pets:

Make 'Golden Paste'

Ingredients
  • 1 cup water (plus 1/2 cup if needed)
  • 1/2 cup turmeric powder preferably organic certainly good quality
  • 1/3 cup cold pressed coconut oil or cold pressed flax or olive oil
  • 1 + 1/2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper
Directions
  • Place turmeric and water in pan, stirring over gentle heat until you have a thick paste. This should take about 7-10 minutes and you may need to add additional water along the way.
  • Add the freshly ground pepper and oil after cooking. Stir well to incorporate the oil and allow to cool.
Notes:
  • You can leave out the pepper if you or your pet cannot tolerate it. The absorption of turmeric will still be improved by cooking the paste and by the inclusion of oil, BUT remember it will be less effective without the pepper.
  • Golden Paste will keep for 2 weeks, refrigerated
  • Freeze a portion if you think you have too much to use within two weeks.

How much to give (or take yourself )

For dogs under 10kg (22lbs) start with 1/4 a teaspoonful 2-3 times daily working up to 1/2 a tsp twice a day.
Over 10kg you can give 1/2 a teaspoonful, over 25kg perhaps a full one twice a day at first working up to two teaspoonfuls - you tend to need less per Kg for larger animals
People and horses would need two teaspoons twice daily perhaps start with one at first and you can mix a wee bit of honey or other herbs in with it.

Uses of Tumeric

OK so what's it used for?

  • arthritis lame older dogs particularly chilly ones
  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease
  • Anti cancer treatment
  • Wound healing and ulcers - you do not need the pepper for external use
  • Many other inflammatory conditions

On it own will not be as affective as using other modalities e.g. diet changes, other herbs, physiotherapy and perhaps acupuncture
Always take the advice of your veterinary professional
